Apostle Islands National Lakeshore


Whether you just picked up a new vehicle from Link Ford Minong or you just had your current Ford serviced, you’re ready to head out to a vacation at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. You’ll enjoy cliffs, beaches, water and land. The area is comprised of 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland. Be sure to bring your camera for some great shots of nature and the lighthouses.


The area offers camping on 19 of the islands plus a campsite on the mainland. You will need to make reservations and a $10 reservation fee is charged. You can reserve camping sites in advance. Individual sites are $15 per night and group sites for eight or more are $30 per night. If you prefer primitive camping, choose one of the zones on 16 of the islands. Make reservations by visiting recreation.gov or by calling (715) 779-3397 and selecting option 1.

Reaching the Islands

You have several options to reach the islands. You can take your own boat, your kayak or ride the excursion boat. The excursion boat holds up to 140 passengers.


Take a narrated sightseeing tour, an island shuttle or a charter boat. Island tours offer nonstop excursions and the shuttle features stops at several islands. Take the most popular tour is the 55-mile “Grand Tour.” This tour travels throughout the islands and is available from late May through the middle of October. When you take a cruise, you’ll have some great views of most of the islands and you’ll get a close look at the historic lighthouses and the sandstone cliffs.

When you visit the island via a shuttle, you have the option to visit the a lighthouse, go birding, hiking, have a picnic and more.

Car Ferry

Your other option is to take a car ferry to Madeline Island. This is the only island that is accessible by vehicle and it’s not within the National Lakeshore. The island features Big Bay State Park and the Madeline Island Historical Museum.

Hollywood to Wisconsin Road Trip

The Giant Spider Invasion

This movie from 1975 was filmed in various places around Wisconsin including Stevens Point. The movie is about giant spiders that terrorize people and is a low budget film.

The Blues Brothers

The 1980 hit The Blues Brothers features a scene that was shot on the I-794 bridge and several Milwaukee buildings.

The Last Kiss

This 2006 romantic comedy that was based on an Italian film from 2001 was filmed in and around Madison.

Public Enemies

This 2009 hit with Johnny Depp and gangsters was shot in several Wisconsin cities including Oshkosh, Columbus, Milwaukee, Beaver Dam and more.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

This 2011 hit movie wasn’t filmed in Wisconsin, but the Milwaukee Art Museum does make an appearance.


This 2011 comedy had some great scenes from Milwaukee.

Making a Road Trip

Create a road trip that hits all of these places or break it up in to a couple weekend trips so you can visit all of these cities. When you make your road trip plan, make reservations ahead of time, especially during peak seasons. You may also want to make reservations for restaurants, too, if the venue is popular and you happen to be visiting the city while something is going on.

Brunet Island State Park


After you pick up your new Ford at Jack Link’s Auto of Rice Lake, head out to Brunet Island State Park to enjoy a day of nature, hiking and more. The park is comprised of a 169-acre island and 1,225 acres on the east bank of the Chippewa River. The park entrance is located at 23125 255th Street, Cornell, Wisconsin, 54732.

You will need an admission sticker to stop in the park, the recreation area, the forest and the trail parking areas. You can purchase a sticker when you arrive at the park; or you can purchase one ahead of time. Annual sticker prices range from $13 for residents aged 65 and older through $38 for those from out of state. Daily rates range from $3 for those aged 65 and older through $11 for those from out of state. You can also purchase a one-hour pass for $5.

Winter Outdoor Skills Crex Camp

This event runs from 9:00 a.m. until noon at Crex Meadows. The four-day event runs from March 21 through March 24. You’ll learn science and conservation through experiences such as winter camping, snowshoeing, challenge courses and tracking. Ages 8 to 15 and parents are welcome. Class size is limited to 20 students, so please pre-register.


From 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2016, head over to the Richard Bong SRA to learn about animals that have eggs, and to try some experiments with eggs to learn why they are perfect for starting life. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Seasonal Scavenger Hunt

Get a set of clues to solve nature riddles when you attend the Seasonal Scavenger Hunt from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Devil’s Lake SP on March 26, 2016. Families work as a team and hike the trails to complete the hunt. Don’t forget your camera and a GPS. You’ll get a small prize fro completing the challenge. Meet at the Nature Center.

Best Ski Areas in Wisconsin


If you want to go skiing, pack up the car or the RV, depending on where you’re going and whether you want to stay in a lodge/cottage or your own place, and head out to some of the best places for skiing in Wisconsin. Alpine Valley Resort

Alpine Valley is located in White Lake and it features 90 skiable acres. This ski area features 14 lifts; and its longest run is 3,000 feet. The vertical is 388 feet. Night skiing is available seven days. The terrain mix is 40-40-20. Rentals and lessons are also available.

Bruce Mound

Bruce Mound is located in Black River Falls and it features 40 skiable acres, a 375-foot vertical, three lifts and a 29-29-42 terrain mix. The longest run is 3,000 feet. Night skiing is available on Fridays. Rentals and lessons are available.

Cascade Mountain

This ski area is located in Portage. The summit is 1,280 feet and the base is 820 feet. Cascade Mountain features 10 lifts, a terrain mix of 37-19-44 and its longest run is 1,800 feet. Night skiing is available seven days.

Christie Mountain

Christie Mountain is located in Bruce and features 20 skiable acres with a 350-foot vertical. The summit is 1,650 feet and the base elevation is 1,300 feet. Christie Mountain features five lifts and a 40-25-35 terrain mix. The longest run is 4,000 feet and night skiing is available from Wednesday through Saturday. Rentals and lessons are also available.
