The Ford F-150 vs Chevy Silverado

If you are ready for a new truck, it’s best to do your research to see which truck best fits your needs. That means comparing trucks from different manufacturers, such as the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado. Once you choose, head over to Jack Link’s Auto to test drive the F-150 to solidify your decision.

Weight and Towing

The more a vehicle weighs, the more horsepower it takes to move it. The new 2015 F-150 is lighter than the Silverado as it uses aluminum for the cab and bed instead of heavy steel. The firewall is steel. And, if you get the Platinum level, it has a turbocharged V-6 so you’ll get better gas mileage due to the combination of a lighter truck and the turbo. Despite being lighter, the F-150 has better towing capability and has a larger payload.

Styling and Engine

The F-150 was fully redesigned for 2015 while the Silverado is almost the same as the 2014 model year. The Ford also has several new convenience and safety features for this year. And, the Ford features a new engine: the 2.7-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine. The Silverado offers a 6.2-liter V-8 with the new LS trim level as one of the few new options.

Both manufacturers offer several powertrains to choose from. The F-150’s base level 3.5-liter V-6 engine makes 283 horsepower. The Silverado also uses a V-6, a 4.3-liter engine. The Chevy engine makes just two more horsepower than the Ford engine, although the Ford does it in less cubic inches than the Chevy does.

If you are looking at bigger engines, the Chevy’s 5.3-liter V-8 makes 355 horsepower; and its 6.2-liter V-8 makes 420 horsepower. Ford offers a V-8 that makes 385 horsepower and another turbocharged V-6 that makes 365 horsepower.

Overall, the F-150 gets better gas mileage than the Silverado with its more efficient engine.
